As we work more with distributed systems, microservices and legacy services, we introduce a web of inter-service dependencies that cause us to face many challenges across our development and deployment pipeline. Resource consumption, deployment time, our testing feedback cycle, third party service flakiness and costing can cause problems. This talk addresses these issues by demonstrating how the technique of ‘API Simulation’ (modern service virtualisation) can be used to overcome these issues. We’ll introduce the theory and practice, and use an open source tool named Hoverfly to easily produce and run third party services throughout your stack – from producing test environments, to unit testing, and to being used with custom middleware in staging environments. When I started in IT the roles were clearly separated. Business Analysts wrote requirements, Architects designed them, Programmers wrote the code, Testers tested the software. Over the last decade or so we have seen a shift towards “generalising specialists” who can cut code, understand a business domain, design a user interface, participate in and automate some of the testing and deployment activities, and who are sometimes even responsible for the health and wellbeing of their own systems in production. To succeed in this new world requires more than “3 years of Java.” The modern developer needs to be constantly reinventing themselves, learning, and helping others to do the same. In this session, Dan explores some of the skills and characteristics of the modern developer, and suggests some ways you can grow them for yourself.

In his Lean Design Thinking talk, Michael McKay discusses how organisations and companies can utilise the new Lean UX methods to innovate and internalise actual user research in practical ways The speech defines the premise of design thinking as a shared thinking tool that links design, business and technology strategic work together around a user experience core. This is done through video documentation of actual projects with engaging interviews of participants and customers. A case story is presented in which participants from a global Fintech company visit India to develop new products for this market using a novel 5 day sprint format. During this talk Soeren Brogaard will share how lean startup thinking at Trackunit (a Danish tech company focused on Industrial IOT within Construction equipment) changes the company and teams in all aspects of the business model. In many ways the lean startup movement is roughly where the big data movement was five years ago—consisting mainly of a buzzword that’s not yet widely understood, whose implications companies are just beginning to grasp.
